it would be nice if on the home page the popular searches were relavent to the searchers default search area. when searching in portland oregon I currently get
Seville Quarter Pensacola, FL
Selzer Realty Ukiah, CA
La Madrina Pizzeria Tucson, AZ
Georgian Furnishing Jefferson, LA
Premiere Cinema 16 Gadsden, AL
Glass Nickel Pizza Madison, WI
Piggly Wiggly Bessemer, AL

@barbara: I’m not sure what you’re referring to. Are you saying that you did a search for something in Long Beach, CA, and some of the results were from outside the city?

Thanks, Mike, that’s exactly what we’re planning to do next. We also expect to integrate IP geo-targeting for new users who haven’t already told us where they’re interested in searching.

David,
I am an account manager out of the Seattle division and we met at the AZ kick off last October. Your speach was awesome and everyone was really excited about the up and coming changes. I wanted to let you know that the changes your team has made so are a great and I’m excited to see the widgets rolling out in the near future.
I wanted to see about one change that my customers have requested on the sales side that may or may not be feasible. I’ve worked with a few auto dealers and the majority of the time the auto dealers want me to search for their main brand, IE: Ford or Honda VS by category IE: New Car Dealer or Used Car Dealer. The auto dealers I’ve worked with have explained that when people search for a car online, they dont search new car dealer or used car dealer, they will typcially search Lexus, Ford or GMC etc.. When you submit the search using the name Ford for example, the result reflects companies that have Ford in their name (Many of which arent even car dealers or advertisers). My personal opinion is that if you search for Ford, we should then redirect to customer to narrow their search using our standard catagories, IE: New Car Dealer, Used Car Dealer, Auto Repair and Service etc.. I think this would benefit our advertisers and it would help the person searching by narrowing their search to what they truly want to find. For example if someone searches Ford, they may be interested in a used Ford truck which would mean there are multiple dealerships outside of Ford dealerships that could assist them.
On a seperate note, the changes I’ve seen with the video’s and new features are pretty awesome and I’m really excited to see what kind of traffic and branding the up and coming widgets will give us. Thanks for your time and happy new year!

David,
It would be extremely helpful to me as a business person to have a way to pull a mailing list from a category: for example: bridal shops. These lists are extremely expensive and cost prohibitive through list services.
Any plans on the horizon to provide something like this?
Thanks
Cynthia Fox

J Sherman,
thanks for the comments! Your input on the auto vertical is exactly why our engineering team is working on all these feature enhancements here at betalabs. We believe local is more than just finding a business, it is discovery down to transaction for everything local! Your autos input is a great example of that – stay tuned for some amazing content, and search coming from our team here at AT&T Interactive.
Best,
David Yoo

Hi Cynthia,
Today you can “save a listing” to a registered user account. You can compile a list of favorites based on searches you conduct on the site. These are saved in your “My Favorites” section. However, I assume you want to just pull a complete list of “bridal shops” in your area. We’ll give it to our product team and they’ll integrate the feature idea.
Thanks for the input!
Best,
David Yoo

David – I am enjoying the posts in the Beta Labs blog. It would be great to connect and review the algorithms I’ve developed w/ FastCall411. My assumption is that proximity is not the primary driver w/i service searches (i.e. lawyers, hair dressers). I sorted merchants based on availability and a *quality of customer service* index. By connecting each call originating from mobile local searches, I was able to mine the call detail records and weight our algorithms based on prior connection data. I essentially put the *phone* back into phone book.

David,
I notice that several sites, particularly Facebook and Friendfeed, offer other competitive applications (Yelp, for example), but we do not currently have a presence there.
Can you provide some insight as to whether or not we are going to pursue the Social Networking demographic/Eco-Boomers?
February 13th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Hi Dennis, local is a competitive space indeed. Without saying too much
we at AT&T Interactive recognize a new and important shift in the way media is consumed – largely driven by the echo-boomers. It is an area of focus…more to come…
Cheers,
David

I would like to discuss with your company, the use of your search engine with our website. We are interested especially in the distance related and location-specific possibilities. Who should I contact for further discussion?

Found this site at work and think it’s great that Yellow Pages exposes ideas to the world. I’ll be sure to provide feedback on the things I try out. Keep up the good work.
